Waitaks! Good on ya for coming over to New Zealand. Mind you, that picture frame isn't the best we have over here.

Gear addiction... I got over that by looking away from my computer and into my wallet; this gave me a good kick in the ass to explore my backyard rather than go on an expensive photography holiday indulging in expensive gear.

While gear is necessary, creative flair is much more important and I wish you well on that journey :)

Hi Hendrik,

Good points raised :) Sometimes 'making it personal' makes for more dramatic essays. Emotion drives art, no? :P

Well, truth be told, I've been very busy of late with my day-job (which evidently isn't photography) and haven't been able to make time for another hike like I used to. Kind of ironic come to think of it. But you do raise a very interesting point. And yes, I has crossed my mind.

I'll probably write another post when I finally do get around to dragging the extra kilo of gear on the next hike :) We shall see how much I loathe it then...

Do you do any hikes for landscapes yourself?

By the way, you do have some fine images here... my comment was certainly not intended to insult your photography. ;-)

Hi, I think there is little merit in going into your reasons for this change. Your getting hung up on Canon's "marketing" ploys and feeling like a cheated lover is very personal and has little to do with the equipment's techical merits. Enjoyed the write-up though.

But I have a very simple and practical question: Seeing that you do a lot of hiking for your landscapes, doesn't it bother you to shlepp around a kilo just for the camera, when the 350D was less than half that?

Thanks Gwac. Thanks for the comment!

All the best to you in finding the creativity and inspiration!

I, too, am still on my journey to find mine :) I am guilty of being gear-oriented definitely, but I guess like they say, the first step is knowing that there is a 'problem', then we do our best to get past it.

Enjoy the light! :)

hi Sam, thanks for leaving a comment.
well, as I've mentioned in other posts, I do admit being guilty of being a gear addict. never ever denied that. and i do believe it's a phase some of us do go through. not every person who owns a dslr is fortunate or created equal to become an 'artist' or 'photographer' overnight.

if one day, i do learn pass this phase on to what you probably consider as an 'artist' and 'photographer', i can look back one day and reminisce about a time when I hadn't learned my lessons yet. it is indeed a journey, and we make mistakes along the way. I'm not flawless and this 4-part is just my story. :)

you are free to pass your judgements, and I am glad that you took the time to comment anyway despite your disgust. Cheers!

Thanks for sharing the story. As a current Canon user I share many of your complaints about Canon's approach to the EOS system. However, I am also glad you concluded your tale with a discussion of the role of gear in photography. While many are "gear-oriented" and always tend to desire something more or better (I am guilty of this), this is not usually the best path to better photography. For many people the extra money that they would spend on a gear upgrade (or switch) would be better spent on photography instruction, either in person or by book, or perhaps a photography vacation. Sometimes what is lacking in our photography is creativity and inspiration rather than additional bodies or lenses.

Cheers!

Ughh. I don't even know why I bother responding to your article. You are a gear addict rather than an artist or photographer, and you also seem to be a typical consumer society brand addict overly influenced by marketing.
